My VND filter causes a blobby X in my photos

You are seeing the “X Bar Effect”
which happens with all VND filters when shot at dark densities and wide focal
lengths due to optical physics.  There is nothing wrong with your filter,
you are just operating outside of the known parameters for this filter. 
Lighten your VND density, zoom in with your lens or a combination or both until
the effect disappears.
